I need your help. I received a $100 gift card to a large department store. Normally, I'd say, "SCORE!" and go shopping. But, things are different this year. What should I do with it?
I would probably use it to buy gifts throughout this year. Others who haven't chosen to participate in the "buy less" mindset may not appreciate a used gift. This way, you'd be able to bless some friends/family, but feel as if your own living had stayed on the plan, so to speak.
If I really felt strongly about not buying new for myself, I'd probably consider donating it to a charity like a homeless shelter or a battered women's shelter or someplace that helps people get a leg up as they are trying to start over. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would love to have the experience of buying something new.
You could buy $100 worth of stuff, then return it for the cash and use the cash to buy your very good friend in Chicago a great present!! :-))) OR for a ticket to come to Chicago to visit that very good friend... is that legal? :-)
You did not purchase anything. Someone else did. You are within the compact rules if you use the prepurchased card to buy something for yourself. This is not your doing. However, by this time, you have already spent it or given it away. The compact does allow the use of gift cards.
Almost a year later, I find your blog and want to comment on something that I'm sure is a matter already resolved, but I can't help but wonder what you ended up doing with the card.
A little too late, but buying a bunch of socks and underwear and donating them to your local homeless shelter would have been nice.
I got a giftcard this year. So far I've used it on 4 large bottles of Dr. Bronner's and two $5 shirts to save for next year. I looked at it as a gift and am trying to use it on things I would have to buy anyway.

Regift it... sell it to someone...I like the "use it for gifts" idea, but don't know if that is against your rules.

I say sell it on craigslist or something like that. Then you have $100 to put towards groceries, etc..
Yeah, I say give it away. You just can't lose doing that. By the way, you guys are our heroes.
I'd give it to the Womacks. :)
